Nicolas Sarkozy, former President of France sentenced to 12 months of House Arrest for illegally financing his re-election campaign

The former President of France, 66-yr-old Nicolas Sarkozy has been told to wear an electronic tag and placed under house arrest after being found guilty of illegally financing his election campaign in 2012.

Sarkozy was accused of having spent nearly twice the maximum legal limit of €22.5 million on his failed bud to be re-elected President of France reports Sky News.

Sarkozy has denied all wrongdoing and will appeal the Paris court decision, according to his solicitor.

In March 2021, Sarkozy was convicted on corruption charges. was accused of having offered a judge a plum job in exchange for confidential information related to another trial he was facing. He has denied all allegations.

Politico reported that the Paris court sentenced him to three years in jail, two of them suspended — although it’s unlikely he will be moved to prison as the term can be served under conditions such as house arrest.
