The EU’s chief Brexit Negotiator has asked his British counter part Dominic Raab to provide the British governments technical information on how a backstop measure that would utilise checks and controls along the Irish Sea could work as a fall-back option to avoid a hard border in Ireland post-Brexit, RTE reports.

Michael Barnier, negotiating with London on behalf of Brussels and Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab have both claimed progress in their recent Brexit negotiations but no breakthrough on Ireland, the BBC reported.

Other areas where agreement is yet to be finalised are intellectual property, data protection and the role of the European Court of Justice.

Time is short as the UK is due to leave the EU on 29 March 2019.
