The current homelessness crisis that is plaguing the country looks set to continue spiraling out of control in the coming months ahead as the Government have rejected a call to stop landlords from evicting struggling tenants from their homes.
In a week were homelessness reached an all time high with over 8,300 people currently without a home to live in, it seems like the Government are unwilling to help the situation by ignoring Focus Ireland’s call which request a change in the law that would stop landlords kickicking people out of their homes even though they are making significant contributions to their rent payments despite falling short in their agreed monthly payments.
The news of the rejection which will come as a blow to the homeless advocacy group, was confirmed today by the current housing minister Eoin Murphy who said there can be no change to the law despite the horrendous situation that has been bestowed on tenants.
Mr Murphy said there can be no enforced changes as landlords are fully entitled to evict tenants if they do not keep up with their required payments.
Although Mr Murphy did agreed that the situation needs to be addressed herein did state that landlords have just as much rights as tenants do and any enforced changes would be in violation of those rights.
Mr Murphy added in order for the situation to be properly dealt with both landlords and tenants would have to work together and find some kind of balance that would see both parties being treated fairly whilst tenants could remain in their homes.
However according to Focus Ireland such a solution is unlikely as tenants are being forced from theit homes on a daily basis by landlords who are unwilling to comprise despite knowing their tenants financial situation.
Focus Ireland previously hoped that such a change to the law would help rectify the current situation as landlords would be unable to evict tenants from their homes even though they were making rent contributions.
