No, I’m safe: Martin doesn’t expect leadership challenge after Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said he does not anticipate any challenge to his leadership of Fianna Fáil, speaking at the party’s Ard Fheis in Dublin as questions about his position continued to swirl.

Questions about his leadership had intensified in recent weeks following a difficult period for the Government, which included the fuel protests and the controversy surrounding Bertie Ahern’s comments on immigration, reports The Mirror.

Martin told reporters he was not concerned about the prospect of a leadership heave, insisting he had the backing of his parliamentary party and ministers.

Several Fianna Fáil TDs have expressed frustration in recent weeks about what they described as decisions being presented to the parliamentary party as a done deal, rather than being discussed openly beforehand, reports The Mirror.

Potential leadership contenders including Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan and Social Protection Minister Dara Calleary have not moved to openly challenge Martin, while deputy leader Jack Chambers has insisted there is no heave building.

Martin confirmed he intends to lead Fianna Fáil into the next general election, pointing to housing, infrastructure, disability, and child poverty as the key priorities his Government is focused on delivering, reports The Mirror.
