No migrants for Rooskey as government abandons plan for hotel asylum centre

The government has abandoned plans to use the County Leitrim town of Rooskey as a direct provision site for asylum seekers.

The government has claimed that a “leasing problem” with the Shannon Key West Hotel, which was intended to house migrants, has meant the plan to place a direct provision centre in small, rural town has had to be abandoned.

The hotel itself has been damaged in suspected arson attacks twice in the last three months and there is overwhelming opposition in the town to the plantation of asylum seekers among the tight knit community.

The government, as in other towns designated for asylum seeker plantation, ignored and dismissed the concerns of local citizens.

Fianna Fáil’s spokesperson on equality, immigration and integration has criticised the governments decision to abandon the plans for Rooskey saying it “sends the wrong message” RTE reported.

However, many social media users believe that the government is committed to what they deem is “the EU and UN’s plan for population replacement through migration”.
