“No one is talking about it” – Mother in Dublin says Long Covid has had ‘devastating impact’

A Dublin mother says prolonged Covid has had a devastating impact on her 12-year-old daughter, reports RTE.

Natalie Kilbane, from Clarehall, has three children and two developed long covid.

One of them, Lara, developed Covid-19 three years ago. Since then, she has suffered from various symptoms of chronic Covid.

These include headache, fever, nausea, and deep fatigue. She also has joint pain.

Ms Kilbane said the illness had badly affected Lara’s studies and she missed many days.

“She might have gone to school for maybe two hours; she could be two days trying to recover, lying on the couch or in bed. Headaches, nausea, abdominal pain. Multiple temperatures a day – joint pain, muscle pain,” reports RTE.

Because one of her sons also has chronic covid, Natalie quit her job as a nurse.

The children were observed by health professionals, but there was no cure, reports RTE.

Ms Kilbane also said there was little discussion about long-term COVID-19 in children.

The HIQA review analyzed 57 international randomized controlled trials that considered interventions in adults with chronic symptoms of Covid-19.

A wide range of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions have been identified, most of which have only been tested in single trials.

These studies were generally small, had short follow-up periods, and usually included only people with symptoms for less than a year, reports RTE.

HIQA said that in addition to the lack of a definitively effective treatment, reports on the safety of these interventions were also limited.

Michelle O’Neill, assistant director of health technology assessment at HIQA, said the clear long-term treatment path for COVID remains unknown.
