No way to motorway – Welsh minister laughed out of assembly after requesting to ask Ireland for motorway funding

Britain has all but left the EU following brexit, and it seems some residents in the UK are rather annoyed that they will miss out on some EU funding to complete vital projects in their infrastructure.

To top things off it seems that some Welsh Assembly ministers think that Ireland should foot the bill given that the UK is no longer part of the EU.

The rather bizarre request comes after an UKIP Assembly Member asked the country’s First Minister if Ireland could fund the cost of a Welsh motorway even though there is no official ties between the two countries.

The minister in question David Rowlands, Assembly Member for South Wales East, has received widespread criticism both here and in Wales after he asked could the Irish government put up some of the vital funding.

It is understood that Mr Rowlands asked: “Will the First Minister explore the possibility of part of the cost for the M4 improvement scheme being borne by the Irish Government, given that three quarters of all Irish exports to the EU and UK pass along that road?”

Even though Mr Rowlands request was serious it was quickly discredited by the Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones, Rowlands who said: “This is a serious proposition, as I understand Ireland may be able to access funds from the Trans-European highways fund, however we no longer remain in the European Union”.

The moment of embarrassment didn’t end there for Rowlands as the parliament chamber erupted in jeers and laughter at his ludicrous request.
