A couple have each been sentenced to 14 years in prison with what the judge described as a savage assault on their daughter, who will require round-the-clock care for the rest of her life.
The 39-yr-old man and 37-yr-old woman, who are originally from North Africa, were convicted last year of assault causing harm and cruelty to children at the family home in Dublin between June 28 and July 2, 2019.
According to RTE, Judge Martin Nolan said it was beyond imagination that parents could destroy their daughter in this way. He said what they were doing was savage and reprehensible.
The judge said a possible explanation that they believed at the time their daughter was possessed by an evil spirit offered no defense or apology.
Investigating Gardai said the convictions sent the message that such crimes would not be tolerated in this country. The North Africam couple came to Ireland a few years ago. To protect the child’s anonymity, they cannot be named.
