Around €6 million a year is needed to feed and house the 400 residents in Dublin Zoo. Feeding time is the most expensive part of the zoo.
Management say that covid restrictions have had a devastating impact on the zoo with visitors down from 1.2 million in 2019 to just 400,000 in 2020.
They say that they’ve lost millions of euro at the non-for-profit zoo. Animal care teams continue to feed and look the animals each day, which costs around €500,000 a month.
The Taoiseach, Michael Martin says that Dublin Zoo will not close and that the government will help financially to ensure that it’s available for generations to come, likewise with Fota Island.
