
Three men were sentenced to prison for the manslaughter of 75-yr-old Tom Niland, a resident of Sligo, Ireland, following a brutal attack and robbery in his home in January 2022. According to a report by RTÉ, Ireland’s national broadcaster, Niland was viciously assaulted, placed on life support, and tragically succumbed to his injuries 20 months later.

The sentencing took place at the Central Criminal Court, where Mr Justice Paul McDermott described the incident as an “unlawful killing of a savage kind” targeting a defenseless elderly man in his own home, a place where he was entitled to feel safe.The court heard that the robbery was premeditated, with Niland deliberately targeted due to his age and because he lived alone. Mr Justice McDermott emphasized the terror Niland “must have experienced” during the attack, underscoring the vulnerability of elderly individuals and their right to security in their homes.
RTE reports that the judge’s remarks on the planned nature of the crime, which added to its severity.The perpetrators were identified as John Irving, aged 31, from Shanwar, Foxford, Co Mayo; Francis Harman, aged 58, of Nephin Court, Killala Road, Ballina, Co Mayo; and John Clarke, aged 37, of Carrowkelly, Ballina, Co Mayo. Irving, who changed his plea to guilty on the fifth day of his trial earlier this year, was sentenced to 16 years in prison, with the final year suspended.
Harman and Clarke, both of whom had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, each received 15-year sentences, with the final year of each sentence suspended. All sentences were backdated to the time the men first entered custody, as is standard practice.
