Number of HIV-positive individuals on the rise in Ireland, while numbers in the continent steadily decrease

The number of HIV-positive individuals in Ireland has seen a dramatic increase over the last 12 months, while numbers are generally decreasing across the continent.

A total of 531 people were diagnosed as HIV-positive in 2018, the highest number of record. HIV-positive individuals can live a normal life with the use of medication, though some key treatments like PrEP are not available here. If left untreated, HIV can lead to the development of the potentially deadly AIDS.

The rising number of HIV cases in Ireland has been blamed to a combination of factors, such lack of proper sexual education, poorly understood mechanisms of how the virus spreads, urban myths, and social stigma.
