Number of migrants in tents along Dublin’s Grand Canal grows to over 70

In Dublin, unaccommodated asylum seekers are being housed in more than 70 tents erected on both banks of the Grand Canal, reports RTE.

From the first forty that were set up on Friday night between Huband Bridge and Mount Street Bridge, more tents have been added.

Now a few tents extend on either side of the spans.

The International Protection Office (IPO) on Mount Street, where several tents were taken down on Wednesday, is fewer than 400 metres away from the site, reports RTE.

To stop further tents from being set up, barriers were placed on the pathways surrounding the IPO and down Mount Street.

Asylum seekers near the Grand Canal were given food and drink by volunteers yesterday night.

The South Georgian Core Residents Association (SGCRA) urged Taoiseach Simon Harris to keep his word and forbid the growth of tented encampments in Dublin city yesterday, reports RTE.

During his speech in the Dáil, Mr. Harris declared that “makeshift shanty towns” will never be permitted to grow.

The SGCRA Chairperson, Kevin Byrne, stated in an interview with RTÉ News this morning that their predictions are coming true.

“We predicted that it would grow, and Mr. Byrne confirmed this.”

Over 1,670 male asylum applicants are still waiting for a state accommodation offer, reports RTE.
