NYC rejects public vote for statue of Catholic saint in favour of honouring two drag queens

The wife of New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, who is running for the Democratic Presidential nomination, has rejected a public poll she initiated after people voted in favour of a building a statue of a Catholic saint.

Chirlane McCray launched a “She Built NYC” program and invited the public to vote on the names of women they want the city to recognize with a statue but after the public voted for Mother Cabrini, McCray rejected the poll and instead picked two drag queens to honour.

Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini was the United States first saint and the patroness of immigrants as she was herself an Italian immigrant who became an American citizen.

McCray rejected Mother Cabrini without explanation, despite the fact she received by far the most votes and picked a number of others who received very few votes including the two drag queens who founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR).

In the end of the seven women that were picked to be honoured none of them were among the top seven most popular choices amongst the public.
