Objections raised by some Dublin businesses in relation to homeless accommodation

Longfields Hotel

Some businesses in the South Georgian Quarter of Dublin have lodged objections to the opening of a new hostel for the homeless.

The new facility would be located within 400 metres from the 5-star Merrion Hotel.

According to sources, over 25 submissions have so far been made to Dublin City Council over proposals to transform the former Longfields hotel at 9-10 Fitzwilliam Street Lower into accommodation for the city’s homeless. The site is owned by the Council.

Objectors have raised concerns about setting up emergency shelter inside buildings that are protected structures, alleging that it may become a ‘wet hostel’ where alcohol consumption may be allowed.
