O’Gorman moves forward with plan to plant 500 migrants in Drogheda hotel despite local opposition

The government is moving on with its intention to house 500 migrants at the final Drogheda hotel that is available to visitors, reports The Mirror.

Angry on Saturday, local politicians and business leaders were notified by Integration Minister Roderic O’ Gorman.

A significant local movement had been started to attempt and persuade the D Hotel to be utilised for both visitor and refugee stays.

However, he let the Drogheda Chamber of Commerce know that this was not going to happen, reports The Mirror.

On the matter, the Minister and the three local TDs, Fergus O Dowd, Ged Nash, and Imelda Munster, have been at odds.

It was only after the agreement with the hotel was finalised that they learned of his intention to relocate so many candidates for International Protection into the town.

It is believed that over the next week or two, the refugees will begin relocating into the hotel, which is near to Drogheda’s major retail complex, Scotch Hall, reports The Mirror.

Since the property will no longer be used as a hotel, obtaining a fire certificate had proven to be difficult.

A few hundred individuals showed up at a recent rally to voice opposition to the approximately 2,000 migrants who presently reside in Drogheda, reports The Mirror.
