The secondary teachers unions are expected to confirm later today that a one-day strike will take place next month.
Executives of the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland and the Teachers Union of Ireland will hold a joint meeting today to discuss how they will proceed in the ongoing conflict over changes to the Junior Certificate.
Minister of Education Jan O’Sullivan urged the unions to return to talks over the dispute.
ASTI general secretary Pat King said a strike is the best course of action.
“We want it over and done; in and out. We want to move on to what we are supposed to be doing – providing good education to students. We don’t want disruption. We want this resolved” he said.
