Only 162 asylum seekers returned to UK under previous legislation

In the six years that the Dublin III Regulation’s prior reciprocal return arrangement with the UK was in effect, just 162 asylum seekers were repatriated to the UK, according to new numbers released by the Department of Justice.

In compliance with the rule, the UK returned 154 asylum seekers to this country between 2015 and 2020.

This indicates that the bilateral agreement changed the number of asylum seekers by a net of only eight individuals.

The government presented recently updated laws to the Cabinet yesterday, allowing asylum seekers who enter the country through Northern Ireland to be sent back to the United Kingdom. This new information was made available to Prime Time.

The Government has already declared that, as a result of a subsequent legal agreement reached with the UK after Brexit in November 2020, no asylum seekers have been sent back to the UK.

The Department of Justice claims that the Covid-19 epidemic caused the arrangement’s operation to be delayed at first. It then faced legal challenges, which resulted in a verdict against the arrangement’s lawfulness in March of this year.

The High Court determined that because the agreement did not procedurally guarantee that asylum seekers could not be sent back to “a safe country,” it was incompatible with EU law.

Even if a repatriation agreement with the UK is implemented, its benefits are questionable given the minimal net impact on asylum seekers during the Dublin III Regulation’s implementation.
