Thousands of the popular Opel Zafira cars may have to be recalled following a number of fires. Opel in Ireland is advising owners of Zafira cars sold between 2005 and 2014 to contact their local garage if they experience any problems with their vehicle. However, a recall notice has not yet been issued.

The problem came to light when a car went up in flames in Cork this morning. The driver of the car was about to board the ferry from Passage West to Cobh when a fire started in the dashboard of his car. He managed to escape, but the car was destroyed. This brings the number of incidents where the vehicles have caught fire up to 130.

The company says “the investigation is still ongoing”. The problem has been traced to the car’s manual air conditioning and heating system. Opel says the problem may have arisen because of the use of non-approved parts used in repairs or repairs being carried out incorrectly.
