Open letter from 60 doctors to UK Home Secretary warns Julian Assange could die in prison if he does not receive immediate medical care

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange could soon die in prison if he does not get urgent medical care an open letter penned by more than 60 British doctors to UK Home Secretary Priti Patel has claimed.

“It is our opinion that Mr. Assange requires urgent expert medical assessment of both his physical and psychological state of health,” wrote the group of doctors, from the UK, Europe Australia, and Sri Lanka.

The doctors want Assange moved from the maximum security Belmarsh prison in southeast London to a university teaching hospital.

Assange spent 7 years hold up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London before being forced to leave earlier this year. The founder of the whistle-blower website was hoping to avoid extradition to United States where he faces charges of espionage.

The British authorities were pursuing Assange on the pretence of rape charges filed in Sweden however, last week Swedish prosecutors dropped the charges saying the evidence is not strong enough to bring charges against Assange.
