The Hong Kong elections, held on Sunday, which were being viewed as a referendum on the months of pro-democracy protests, some of which have descended into violence, have been a huge success for the pro-democracy parties.

17 of the city’s 18 districts are now controlled by controlled by pro-democracy councillors with Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam has saying the government will “seriously reflect” on the results of the election which saw a record 71% turnout.

The protests, which have lasted several months now, are aimed at stopping increasing control being exerted on the former British colony by the Communist dictatorship in Beijing.

Owing to the semi-autonomous status, economic importance and global perceptions, Beijing has been slow to react to the pro-democracy protests in the city, which would be incomprehensible in mainland China.
