Opinion: Irish Catholics once again reduced to the status of second class citizens as Mass gets targeted by Gardai but Mosques allowed to flout rules

There have been numerous reports of worshipers attending Mosques every Friday since the lockdown began and here at the Liberal.ie we have covered some of these incidents.

Despite the regular reports of Mosques being full of attendees, Gardai are yet to raid one of these houses of worship or pursue any kind of fines as they have against Catholics for exercising their right to practice their faith and people are now understandably asking why?

After footage last Sunday showed Gardai shutting down a Mass at a church in Athlone one of the parishioners asked one of the Garda what Irish people have been asking themselves for some time, why are only Catholics being targeted by authorities while others, such as Muslims free to flout the restrictions?

Ireland seems to be a country where certain minorities are afforded special privileges purely on account of their ethnicity or religion and ironically in a country where Irish people and Irish Catholics in particular endured centuries of oppression it is as if we have once again been reduced to the status of second class citizens.
