The 37,000 nurses and midwives who are currently on strike around the country need to be very careful that the government doesn’t manage to spin the public’s opinion against them.
Nurses are striking because they want better working conditions and pay restoration.
Nurses pay conditions absolutely horrendous with trainee nurses having to cover much more than their experience should allow, while full-time nurses are massively understaffed.
What the nurses need to be however, is very careful because the government are trying to spin the whole strike against them and turn the public’s opinion against the.
Using tactics of us against them in terms of numbers of appointments being cancelled and the most vulnerable patients not being cared for.
The government needs to be very careful because public opinion is with the nurses. Everyone at some point has come across a situation where they needed a nurse either directly or for a family member or friend.
It’s alright for Leo Varadkar and Simon Harris to say that they’re not willing to increase nurses pay if it doesn’t benefit the taxpayer, these are two men on massive money who can afford to go to any private clinic or even broad if they need medical treatment.
The public needs to be aware of this devious an underhanded tactic that Leo Varadkar and Simon Harris appear to be pushing out. They need to be aware that the most vulnerable patients are going to be used as the sign post to get nurses off the picket line.
It also deflects the massive overspending on the new children’s hospital that Simon Harris knew about for quite some time before he decided to tell anyone about.
As it stands, the nurses are in pole position to see their demands met but they need to be very careful because if there’s one thing we can all be sure about, it’s that Leo Varadkar and Simon Harris will try to play dirty.
