Opinion: The disgraceful increase in bin charges is rapidly becoming another Irish Water disaster

The scrutiny of bin charges over the past number of weeks is absolutely ludicrous. It’s a non-entity problem. The people running our government blatantly have no idea as to what actual income tax is designated for.

With over 500,000 people in Ireland over the age of 65, thousands upon thousands with disabilities needing to discard wasted accessories, surely the government should sit down and recognise the woods from the trees and that bin charges should be incorporated into income tax.

The pay-by-weight isn’t a fair system. A prime example would be a carer on circa €200 a week simply cannot afford a proposed doubling in bin fees.

Make no mistake, this is not a socialist view, far from it, what needs to be done here is income tax needs to be delegated properly – not to quango’s or massive civil servant wages in excess of €150,000.

A proper step back needs to focus on one of two options; a low flat rate or an incorporation to income tax.

The government need to be very careful that bin charges don’t turn into another water charges fiasco.
