Bin charges fiasco: Housing Minister Simon Coveney will consult with the Attorney General in relation to capping spiralling bin charges

The bin charges issue is rapidly escalating to become ‘Irish Water Redux’, as waste management companies scramble to rip people off.

In an effort to avert yet another disaster, Simon Coveney has now announced that he will consult the Attorney General’s office about what can be done to shield the taxpayer from impending price hikes.

Under the new system, due to be implemented on July 1, some homeowners may see their bills double or treble.

Mr. Coveney said “I want the assurance that no one is going to be asked to pay more next year than this year,”

“We’re not simply going to ask the industry on a voluntary basis to do this. I want to be sure that what I ask for is actually followed through on.”

“That’s why I have asked the industry to agree to a cap on charges so that we can reassure people that nobody would pay more next year than they would this year,”
“If you ask people who are currently operating on a pay-by-weight system, and about 20% of households are, very few of them would change away from that now.”

It is understood that public protests about the issue have already begun, and they are likely to spread to most communities across Ireland unless the charges are brought under control.
