Opinion: The people who walked the streets in the rain are the ones who beat Irish Water

The time has come for people to sit back and pat themselves on the back – those people, of course, are the ones who got out their brolly, their winter coat, scarfs, gloves and hats and braved the elements day in and day out of the campaign to defeat Irish Water.

From elderly gentlemen ending up in hospital from confrontations with meter installers, to mothers being arrested by gardai as pictures of the arrested being manhandled into the back of garda van were sent around the world on social media.

The hundreds of thousands, let me emphasize that again – the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of all creed, colour and race who took to the streets with their banners, their flags and whistles are the champions of Irish Water.

Make no mistake, it wasn’t a working class tax – it was a tax on a God-given-right – the right to water.

General taxation guided by local authorities should cover water maintenance – not an immoral tax enforced with an iron fist by European overlords.

The bottom line tonight – regardless of any interference by Fianna Fail, we won’t accept a suspension – we have defeated Irish Water, we the people of Ireland who walked the streets and battled the weather, the political elite and the European overlords.

The next time we’ll see Irish Water – it will be in an episode of reeling in the years!
