Out-of-her-depth: Egypt, Morocco, India, Brazil and Malawi added to ‘safe’ countries list, says McEntee

Egypt, Morocco, India, Brazil, and Malawi have been added to the list of safe nations, according to Minister of Justice Helen McEntee’s announcement, reports RTE.

It implies that applications for international protection made by asylum seekers from certain countries will be processed in three months.

Minister McEntee gave her and her other Cabinet members an update on the additions.

According to IPAS data, the number of Malawian asylum seekers has climbed by one over the last year, from 224 to 225 applications.

There were an additional 76 Moroccan asylum seekers over the same period, bringing the total number of applications to 370, reports RTE.

While the number from India climbed by 66, from 132 to 198, the number from Egypt increased from 367 to 464.

Due to a change in how the Department of Integration releases its statistics, the number of Brazilian asylum applicants on June 25, 2017, was 65. It is unclear how many there are now. For those nations where there are now less than 121 asylum applicants, the agency does not release the statistics.

It occurs at a time when opinion polls show that immigration is becoming a more pressing issue for the population, reports RTE.

The government feels that it must review its immigration procedures in addition to taking more action to provide accommodations for those requesting international protection.

A state’s status as a “safe country” of origin does not exclude an individual from requesting international protection.

It does, however, put the burden of proof on the applicant to show why, and by way of exception, they require protection.

It implies that nationals seeking asylum will experience expedited processing, have their applications evaluated, and get conclusions in a maximum of ninety days.

Safe nations of origin are those in which evidence of a widespread and persistent lack of persecution, torture, or cruel or humiliating treatment can be found, as well as a lack of threat from indiscriminate violence, reports RTE.
