Outrage as teacher taped 7-yr-old’s mouth shut in class for talking too much

A teacher allegedly taped the mouth of a 7-yr-old boy because he talked too much in class, his mother claims. The boy, who suffers from asthma, is said to have his mouth covered in what the school claims was a game that the children enjoyed.

Her mother said her son was too traumatised to go back to school and that he had missed the last two weeks of the semester due to the so-called “game”. The principal of Colwill School in West Auckland, New Zealand, did not deny this, but wrote to the student’s mother that an investigation had confirmed the teacher’s version of events that it was a “game”, the local outlet Stuff reports.

The mother said she was “appalled that a teacher would do something like this” and that she was also concerned that her son had difficulty breathing and took asthma medication every day. The boy did not tell his family what happened because he thought he was in serious trouble, his mother said.

But another girl from the same school told the boy’s sister that he was one of several children to whom this happened. The mother said, “One of the other girls came to [his sister] and said “Hey, your brother’s mouth was taped for talking too much in class”.

The teacher claimed it was a game but apologised to the pupil and his parents for ‘causing upset’ to the family. Police are now investigating the incident.
