Over 100 migrants feared dead after vessel reportedly sinks off the coast of Libya

Over 100 migrants are dead after a ship reportedly sunk off the coast of Libya.

Although the reports have yet to be confirmed by Libyan officials, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) say that a vessel with a high number of people sunk on Tuesday.

In a brief statement on Twitter, MSF said: “We have every reason to fear the worst that over 100 lives were lost and nobody will ever know for sure.”

The news comes on a day when 80 migrants were allowed to disembark from the Open Arms rescue ship in Lampedusa.

It is believed that the stranded migrants who were living in cramped conditions on board the ship were taken in after a Italian prosecutor ordered the ships seizure and its evacuation.

The ship had been at centre of a dispute between its Spanish charity operators and the Italian Government who refused to allow the migrants on board to disembark for the past two weeks.
