Over 70 per cent of Irish adults say they think the Re-Turn scheme has been a success

A total of 71 per cent of adults believe that the Re-Turn scheme has been successful since its introduction in Ireland, reports Breaking News.

Two years after the Deposit Return Scheme (Re-Turn) was launched, iReach surveyed adults across Ireland about its effectiveness and the barriers to its use, reports Breaking News.

One in four adults (25 per cent) now use the return machines in shops or supermarkets much more than they did at the start, while 14 per cent use them a little more than before.

Usage is highest among adults aged 25-34, with 30 per cent saying they use the machines much more than they did initially, reports Breaking News.

Meanwhile, 13 per cent of adults report using the machines less or having stopped using them altogether. Among adults aged 18-24, this rises to 25 per cent.

Of those who have reduced or stopped usage, 41 per cent said the refunded amount does not make it worthwhile. Additionally, 36 per cent felt that having to insert items one-by-one is not convenient, 33 per cent cited inconvenient machine locations, and 32 per cent reported that machines are faulty, reports Breaking News.

Two-thirds of adults (66 per cent) believe the machines have had a positive impact on the environment, with 26 per cent strongly agreeing.

This sentiment is strongest among adults aged 25-34, with 83 per cent believing the scheme benefits the environment, reports Breaking News.

Fifty-eight per cent of adults think Irish towns and cities are cleaner because people collect bottles or cans for the rewards, with 21 per cent strongly agreeing.

However, 48 per cent of adults feel the scheme is just another way for the government to raise money, with 24 per cent strongly agreeing with this view, reports Breaking News.

Finally, 17 per cent of adults have reverted to putting bottles or cans in the green bin due to the hassle of using the machines. This is highest among adults aged 18-24, at 33 per cent, reports Breaking News.
