In a move that will sadden some and please others, the owners of Glasnevin Cemetery have decided that the only way to deal with the ongoing vandalism of a memorial wall is to “discontinue” it.

According to RTE, the memorial has been controversial due to the fact that it acts as a memorial for every person that died in the fighting between 1916 and 1923, and that this would include the Civil War.  This angered some as they did not want the names of security forces, including the Black and Tans, to be included on the wall.  As a result, the wall has been vandalised three times.

While RTE’s Joe Duffy has said he intends to protest the decision to discontinue the wall, the Dublin Cemeteries Trust say they cannot keep repairing the wall or pay for security guards to look after it. Duffy has said he is “deeply saddened and shocked that vandalism and thuggery has triumphed” in this case.

However, councillor Niall Ring said that many people were upset by the wall, and that the decision by the owners was the correct one.

It is now said that the names will be taken off the wall and replaced by blank panels while they may erect a standalone memorial in another location.
