Parents will be able to sign up for free GP care fon the under-6s from Monday

Parents can sign up to the scheme from the beginning of next week.

HSE representatives are saying that 51 percent of doctors have agreed to the scheme. A spokesperson for the organization has confirmed that public registration for Under 6s Free GP Care will begin from Monday, June 15, with the service actually commencing on July 1st.

An online registration system will be available from Monday.

There are concerns, however, that due to the relatively low uptake, availability of the scheme may be patchy in some areas. In total, 1,232 of the 2,413 GPs who currently hold medical card contracts have signed up.

High uptakes have been recorded in Donegal (93 per cent), Roscommon (90 per cent) and Longford/Westmeath (81 per cent).
But in parts like south Tipperary, for instance, just 8 per cent of GPs are taking part in the scheme.

Other areas with low uptake include Cork South (22 per cent), Louth (22 per cent) and Kildare/West Wicklow (25 per cent).

Uptake in Dublin varies between 32 per cent in Dun Laoghaire and 71 per cent in west Dublin.
