Parish Priest denies Fianna Fail TD Holy Communion because he voted yes to abortion

There has been a storm of online controversy and debate after TD Robert Troy was denied communion by a Catholic priest at a mass in Westmeath, because he voted Yes for abortion.

Parish Priest Fr John Hogan denied the TD, who admitted to voting yes in the abortion referendum last May, at a
mass in Multyfarnham.

In the Catholic faith the administering of communion is only to take place to a person who is in a state of grace i.e. has not committed a mortal sin since their last confession.

Last year other priests in the country warned those who voted yes to what they described as legalising the ending of an unborn child’s life could not seek to use Catholic churches for ceremony’s such as weddings unless they had sought absolution.

Abortion is considered a mortal sin and the promulgation of abortion through legislation has even led to calls for excommunication (excluding someone from participation in the sacraments and services of the Christian Church) of those in support.

Such calls have been made for the excommunication of New York Governor Chris Cuomo after signed a law legalising elective abortions up birth.
