Leo Varadkar, the former Taoiseach, has agreed to write and publish a “revealing, intimate and important memoir,” reports RTE.
After a fierce bidding battle, Sandycove, the Dublin-based imprint of Penguin Random House, the world’s largest publishing house, secured the rights to the book globally.
“I have the freedom now to say things I could not while holding office,” Mr Varadkar said in a statement, “and I have enough distance to reflect on the mistakes I made as much as what was achieved,” reports RTE.
Leo Varadkar, who became Ireland’s youngest Taoiseach in 2017 when he assumed office, resigned from both his position and the Fine Gael party leadership earlier this year. In addition, he declared that following the next Irish general election, he will be leaving politics.
According to a press statement announcing the agreement, readers would gain “insights into experiences that only a Taoiseach could have” from the book, which will provide them “a unique behind-the-scenes look at the formation and evolution of a senior politician,” reports RTE.
Author Max Edwards of the UK arranged the publication agreement.
According to reports, the book will discuss several significant events in Mr. Varadkar’s career to date, including his discussions with the Pope regarding the legacy of church abuses and his relationship with former US President Barack Obama, as well as the difficulties posed by the Covid pandemic and the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, reports RTE.
“I am really enjoying writing my story,” Leo Varadkar says, “and I was keen to do so while it was still fresh in my head. It’s as much a personal memoir as it is a book about political history. There is so much people know already about my time at the top but almost as much that they don’t,” reports RTE.
