Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre have launched a new online mental health information resource for young travellers.

YoungPavees.ie points to younger members of community services whose mental health has been affected by racism, discrimination, drug problems and unemployment.

The website was created after workshops with young travellers who provided feedback to create the resource titled ‘Mind Your Nuck’.

Clinical information was developed in consultation with HSE and volunteer mental health groups.

The website also offers information for parents and traveller contacts that can help them support their children.

Users can browse content with their smartphone and information available in listening mode that addresses literacy and privacy issues, according to Pavee Point.

Pavee Point’s mental health coordinator said the tragic deaths of young travellers across the country in recent months have sent a wave of shock through the community. According to Patrick Reilly, parents of travellers are concerned about the mental health of their children.

Living conditions, educational and job opportunities, discrimination and racism are affecting young travellers and these issues need to be addressed, according to those behind the website.

Eastern Region Travelers Health Unit (THU) Chair Martina Queally said the website presents an innovative solution to address mental health inequalities of travellers.

“It also will support implementation of key actions in the forthcoming National Traveller Health Action Plan,” she said, according to RTE.
