Pedestrian who claimed false injury in bus collision gets given 150 hours community service

A pedestrian who falsely claimed to have been injured in a bus-car collision was sentenced to 150 hours of community service instead of 18 months in prison, reports Breaking News.

After witnessing a two-car collision in Dublin city centre in 2017, David Gregan went to a solicitor’s office and claimed he was injured in the accident, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard earlier.

Gregan, 43, claimed to have suffered soft tissue injuries, including his shoulder. The parties to the case were Dublin Bus and Trinity College – as the vehicle involved in the accident was registered to the college.

However, the insurance company’s anti-fraud investigator reviewed CCTV footage of the crash and found that Gregan – although present on the sidewalk – was not close enough to be hit by the two cars involved, the court ruled.

Gregan withdrew his claim in 2018 and no payment was made, although other parties lost €9,000 in legal fees, Garda detective Damien McKenna told Diana Stewart BL to press charges in the case.

Judge Martin Nolan said it was clear Gregan “succumbed to temptation of what he thought was easy money”, reports Breaking News.

He noted Gregan’s lack of criminal convictions and said he did not believe Gregan deserved a prison sentence.

He sentenced Gregan to 150 hours of community service instead of 18 months in prison, reports Breaking News.
