It’s nothing short of utterly disgraceful, but the wonderful charity in Cork known as Penny Dinners say that they’re inundated with families who say that they’re afraid they won’t be able to afford to put food on the table or heat their homes this winter.

They say that they normally cater for homeless people but that this time, it’s regular every day families.

Alongside that, other charities around the country say that they’re bracing for tough times ahead, including spikes in calls for assistance due to fuel poverty.

If the hikes materialise, as expected, over the course of the winter, charities say that they’re now expecting more calls for help this year than since the economic crash.

They say that people are going without heat and light than they’re able to. They also say that they’re going to cut back on food, heat, oil, showers and light.
