People are fed up! Potential €15 monthly levy on broadband bills to replace TV licence fee whether you watch it or not

The government is considering proposals to replace Ireland’s outdated TV licence fee, which could result in a new levy of €10 to €15 a month charged on household internet and phone bills, reports Business Spot.

A group composed of members from various departments has discussed the possibility of implementing a ‘digital levy’ to replace the current €160 annual payment, which primarily funds RTÉ.

There is an ongoing debate within the government on how to fund public service broadcasting, with the media minister Catherine Martin supporting a fully exchequer-funded model, while the finance minister Michael McGrath prefers some form of levy, reports Business Spot.

In recognition of the way most people in Ireland now consume media, alternative options, including a supplementary charge on household bills for services that enable access to media, have also been considered.
