People aren’t happy with endless road closures and travel restrictions in Dublin, Louth, Mayo because of Biden

Localised road closures will remain in Dublin, Louth and Mayo this week for a visit from US President Joe Biden.

Mr Biden began his five-day visit to Belfast last night and the PSNI said traffic and crowd management plans would be in place at venues where events are held.

Several streets in central Belfast were closed last night and safety barriers were put up.

Gardai said traffic restrictions during the journey would be “kept to the minimum required” and the intended impact will be “localised and minimal”, reports RTE.

In addition to crash road closures, motorists are told to expect “temporary rolling road closures to facilitate security escorts”, reports RTE.

Parking restrictions are in effect on Earlsfort Terrace, Leeson Street Lower, Hatch Street Lower, Castle Street and Ship Street in Dublin city center and will be in place until Saturday.

For safety reasons, Earlsfort Terrace is closed to traffic until Saturday.

Mr Biden will arrive and depart Dublin Airport several times during the week, but normal airport operations will not be affected.

However, people using the airport are being asked to allow extra time to travel as rolling road closures are expected, especially late Wednesdays and early Fridays.

Mr Biden’s visit on Wednesday will take place primarily in County Louth and Gardai said there will be local road closures, parking restrictions and detours where events are held, reports RTE.

On Thursday, the march will focus on Dublin’s Phoenix Park and South Dublin city centre.

Dublin Zoo, which is located in the park, will also be temporarily closed to visits.

A spokesperson for the zoo said: “Staff have been provided with accreditation, ensuring animals are cared for” and “tickets affected by the closure will be fully refunded”, reports RTE.

White House Homeland Security spokesman John Kirby confirmed that President Biden will visit the Knock Shrine during his visit to Mayo on Friday.

Speaking to RTÉ’s News at One, Father Richard Gibbons, parish priest and rector of Knock Shrine, said it would be a private moment, but everyone was very excited about it.

He said the team got a tip when they saw many Gardaí and some secret services in the area, but this has only been confirmed in the last few days.

Fr Gibbons said: “It will probably be the most private element of his visit to Ireland because of his commitment to his faith that he would like to stop off here to say a private prayer and then move on to his other engagements. We’re very happy to facilitate that. We welcome them here and like any other pilgrims that come to Knock, it’s a moment maybe for the one for a bit of quiet peacefulness within the hectic activity that would be surrounding his visit,” reports RTE.
