‘People should be more responsible for their own personal safety’ – Humphreys says Ireland is gripped by a compensation culture

The Minister Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys, has said more has to be done to tackle what has been called ‘compensation culture’.

Speaking in the Dáil on Tuesday, Ms Humphreys said rising compensation claims are greatly affecting companies and business across the country.

Ms Humphreys comments come as the Government have been heavily criticised for not addressing the issue.

Although she agreed more needed to be done to tackle the issue, Humphreys said people must take responsibility for their actions.

She added people think its acceptable to claim compensation as they believe its everyone’s fault but their own.

Humphreys also told the Dáil that  people should be more responsible when it comes to their own personal safety.

It is understood Ms Humphreys came in for strong criticism from opposition TD’s who claim that the Government aren’t doing enough to tackle rising insurance premiums which are continuing to sprial due to compensation claims.
