Plummeting! Electric car sales had a massive slump again over the past month

Even while the market as a whole grew by 10% last month, sales of new electric cars fell 12.3% in October compared to the same month the previous year, reports Breaking News.

16,656 new EVs have been registered so far this year, which is a 25.4% decrease from the same time last year.

The decline in EV sales has hurt certain brands more than others. While EV sales at Skoda, Renault, Opel, Mini, and Cupra have decreased by more than 50% from the previous year, EV sales at Volkswagen and Hyundai have decreased by 37.5%. This year, Tesla’s sales have decreased by 20.3%, reports Breaking News.

With 1,502 registrations, the VW ID.4 is the best-selling EV (down 48% from the previous year), Kia’s EV6 (down 18.5%), Tesla’s Model Y (down 41.5%), and Tesla’s Model 3 (up 18.7%) with 1,292 sales.

According to Brian Cooke, director general of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (Simi), “October marks the ninth consecutive month of decline in electric vehicle registrations which is clearly a worrying trend. The decline in EV sales emphasises the need for continued Government supports and initiatives to boost sales in this market segment,” reports Breaking News.

There have been 119,668 new automobile registrations so far this year, which is 1.2% fewer than the previous year.

With 30.79 percent of the market this year, petrol engines continue to be the preferred option for Irish consumers purchasing new cars, followed by diesel at 22.94 percent. Plug-in hybrids make up 9.8% of the total, whilst regular hybrids make up 20.99%. Sales that are entirely electric account for 13.9% of all new sales.

Toyota, Volkswagen, Skoda, Hyundai, and Kia are the top automakers, and the Hyundai Tucson, Skoda Octavia, and Kia Sportage are the most popular models, reports Breaking News.
