Police in Portugal launch an investigation after British woman is allegedly raped by an Irish tourist

Police authorities in Portugal have begun an investigation after a British woman alleged that she was raped by an Irishman at a hotel in Portimao.

The investigation comes after the woman who is aged in her 30s claimed that she was sexually assaulted by the Irish tourist who is also aged in his 30s.

It is alleged that the man forcibly had sex with the woman who cannot remember how she got into the hotel in the Tres Castelos beach region as she was heavily drunk.

Police investigating the alleged incident which occurred on Tuesday say they have questioned the man about the allegations.

It is understood the man has denied the claims and he has stated that their sexual encounter was consensual.

Authorities say an investigation is currently ongoing.
