Canadian police are searching for a couple who locked their baby in a hotel safe at the Howard Johnson Hotel by the Falls in Niagara Falls.

The panicked parents called a maintenance worker to free the infant. It took an employee about 20 minutes to remove the baby from the safe at which point the baby was alert and crying, according to police. The parents left the hotel with the baby before the police were notified of the incident by the staff.

Detective Constable Amanda Sanders, of Niagara regional police’s child abuse unit wants to find the family to understand how the child came to be locked in a safe. Police do not yet know the gender of the baby.”Police wish to locate the family to ascertain the welfare of the child,” the police service said in a news release.

US border services have also been notified about the incident but the family have not yet returned to their New York home. The family are thought to be Asian with very little English and are thought to be travelling in a 2015 grey Ford van, with the license plate B31EUB.
