Polish police have officially ruled on claims made by Julia Wendell, a young woman who believes she is Madeleine McCann, reports The Mirror.
The British girl was abducted from her family’s holiday apartment when she was three in Praia da Luz in 2007, and investigators have been searching for her ever since.
Ms. Wendell took to Instagram in her last few weeks, presenting what she believed was proof that she was indeed Madeleine, going so far as to say that she doesn’t believe her parents are biologically related to her.
Even after documenting her body marks and the rare coloboma in her eye, which looked identical to that of the abducted three-year-old girl, Polish police rejected her claims outright, reports The Mirror.
Officials dropped her case just days after her family released a statement accusing the young woman of allegedly suffering from psychiatric problems.
Pawel Noga, of provincial police headquarters in the western city of Wroclaw, said investigators “ruled out” Wendell’s claim after meeting with her biological family.
The family also said Ms Wendell had left the house and refused therapy in recent weeks.
The 20-year-old based her earlier claims on “something” her grandmother had mentioned about the McCanns in the past, saying she also found a family photo of a man who allegedly attacked her as a child.
She claimed it looked exactly like a composite sketch of the wanted suspect for Madeleine’s kidnapping that was posted on the official website, reports The Mirror.
“I have similar eyes, shape of face, ears, lips, I had the gap between the teeth,” she detailed in one of her early posts on her Instagram account, @iammadeleinemcann, reports The Mirror.
While there were mentions of a potential plan to conduct a DNA test on Wendell and the McCanns, they were abruptly dropped after their claim began to fall apart following extensive online scrutiny.
