Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said that the government would be willing to hold two referenda in March in the interests of equal rights, reports RTE.
In his speech in the Dáil, he said he would be able to present the content of the referendums next Tuesday.
The ruling came after Labour leader Ivana Bacik vowed to quickly launch the impending referendum.
Bacik raised concerns that the proposal would be more restrictive than the Citizens’ Assembly recommended, reports RTE.
The government is expected to approve that a referendum will be held in the next cabinet.
There are expected to be two referendum questions, one on women’s place in the home and recognizing the importance of “care”.
