The first phase of the largest general election in the world kicks off today, as some 900 million people are eligible to vote across 20 states in India.
The poll is divided into seven separate stages, so officials can manage the sheer numbers involved in the proceedings.
The last stage will end on May 19, and vote count will commence on May 23.
