Prayers have been said for Pope Francis as he remains in a critical condition in Rome.
Pope Francis, hospitalized for two weeks with double pneumonia, experienced an “isolated breathing crisis” and received “non-invasive mechanical ventilation” to assist his breathing, according to a Vatican statement. This update follows an earlier report that the pontiff had a restful night, coming a day after the Vatican noted his critical condition had improved for the second day in a row.
The 88-year-old was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 due to breathing difficulties, raising global concern as his health worsened into pneumonia affecting both lungs. In its morning health bulletin, the Vatican stated, “As in recent days, the night passed quietly, and the pope is now resting.”
Following a challenging weekend marked by a respiratory episode, the Vatican reported modest progress in his condition this week. Nonetheless, his prognosis remains “reserved,” with medical experts cautioning that his age and underlying health issues could prolong a full recovery.
“Given the complexity of the clinical picture, further days of clinical stability are necessary to resolve the prognosis,” the Vatican said.
