Possible legal cases against the Tavistock Centre over treatment given to children suffering gender dysphoria

The controversy over the Tavistock Centre continues to rumble on in the UK, with reports that the NHS Trust responsible for the clinic may face legal action over the treatment given to some young patients.

According to Sky News, a UK-based law firm is said to be bringing a group claim against the Trust on the grounds that some young patients at the centre were allegedly “rushed into treatment” and given puberty-blocking drugs.

The NHS has already issued an order for the Centre to be wound down after dealing with young people since it opened in 1989.  It is estimated that it worked with approximately 9,000 children who were aged 17 and under, addressing issues surrounding gender dysphoria, where a person experiences distress and  unease due to a mismatch between their gender identity and their biological sex.  Some of these children were prescribed with drugs that affect hormones and are known as “puberty-blockers”.

In response to news of potential legal actions, Sky News reported that the NHS said that the Tavistock Centre is “committed to patient safety”.
