GardaĆ arrested a pregnant woman earlier this week after stopping her at a checkpoint in north Tipperary, CorkBeo has reported.

Officers from Killaloe Garda Station were carrying out a mandatory intoxicant checkpoint when they noticed a driver attempting to avoid it. After the vehicle was stopped, GardaĆ carried out roadside tests for alcohol and drugs, reports The Mirror.

The driver, who was pregnant, tested positive for cocaine and was subsequently arrested.

A spokesperson for An Garda SĆochĆ”na said: “GardaĆ were conducting a Mandatory Intoxicant Checkpoint when they noticed a vehicle trying to evade the checkpoint. GardaĆ attached to Killaloe Garda Station went and spoke to the female driver. Thanks to the Garda mobility device, it was discovered that the driver was uninsured. The driver was tested at the road side for alcohol and drugs. The drug test returned a positive indication for Cocaine and the pregnant driver was arrested and processed at Nenagh Garda Station. The results of the blood sample are awaited. The car was also seized,” reports The Mirror.

The ā€œgame-changingā€ Garda Mobility App was rolled out nationwide last year, giving officers immediate access on their phones to a comprehensive database of vehicles and drivers, including licence status and offences.

The more recent introduction of the Driver Number System allows GardaĆ on patrol and at checkpoints to instantly view the history of individual motorists, forming part of a wider crackdown on dangerous, uninsured and disqualified drivers, reports The Mirror.

All drug-driving offences carry a mandatory period of disqualification, with the maximum penalty being a €5,000 fine and up to six months’ imprisonment on summary conviction.

Driving without insurance can also lead to a fine of up to €5,000, five penalty points and, at the court’s discretion, a prison sentence of up to six months, reports The Mirror.
