President Donald Trump suggests delaying upcoming general election

Donald Trump has called on the upcoming US Presidential election to be delayed, citing concerns of
ballot fraud in postal voting systems.

Currently scheduled for November 2020, six states have already introduced plans for postal voting due to Covid-19 health concerns. On Twitter the President declared that potential ‘foreign interference’ with postal votes could lead to the ‘most inaccurate and fraudulent election in history’.

Legally the President does not have the power to delay and election, meaning such a decision would have to be made through congress. Even in the event of a postponed election, under the constitution Trump’s Presidency would still have to end on the 20 th of January.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is quoted by the BBC as asserting that while the Government shouldn’t make such a drastic legal move ‘on the fly’, he desired an election ‘that everyone was confident in’.
