With his election as president, Donald Trump has completed an incredible comeback four years after losing the presidency and ushered in a new American leadership that will probably put both American democratic institutions and international relations to the test, reports RTE.

Following two assassination attempts and a late Democratic decision to field Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race in July, Mr. Trump, 78, regained the White House following a campaign characterised by divisive language that widened the nation’s rift.

According to two individuals who spoke to Reuters, Ms. Harris would concede the race to Trump in a speech at about 4 p.m. (9 p.m. Irish time), reports RTE.

The former president exceeded the 270 Electoral College votes required to win the presidency with his triumph in Wisconsin, a swing state.

According to Edison Research, Mr. Trump had won 279 electoral votes to Ms. Harris’ 223 as of 8 a.m. local time, with numerous states still to be tabulated.

In the popular vote, he also had a lead of almost 5 million votes over Ms. Harris, reports RTE.

“America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” Mr. Trump declared in front of a boisterous gathering of supporters at the Palm Beach County Convention Centre in Florida.

Despite consistently poor popularity ratings, Mr. Trump won. He has had four criminal indictments, been impeached twice, and been convicted civilly accountable for slander and sexual assault.

A New York jury found Mr. Trump guilty in May of fabricating financial documents to conceal payments of hush money to a porn star, reports RTE.

After his baseless accusations of election fraud prompted a crowd of supporters to assault the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an unsuccessful attempt to reverse his 2020 loss, Mr. Trump’s political career had seemed to be ended.

However, by taking advantage of voters’ worries about rising costs, he defeated Democratic nominee Ms. Harris and swept over opponents within his Republican Party, reports RTE.
